Music for Unstoppable

We’ve just completed work on the forthcoming Denziel Washington film, Unstoppable for composer Harry Gregson Williams. We’ve been working on the score for the film remotely from our studios in the UK and sending unfeasibly large audio files overnight to LA, much to the disgust of our respective internet providers. The film is directed by Tony Scott and also stars Chris Pine from Star Trek.

A high proportion of our work on the score was sound design along with conventional composing. This entailed many days working on the sound of the train and experimenting with all kinds of metal groans and textures. Loads of fun and very challenging as ever on a Tony Scott film.

Here’s the film’s synopsis :

A massive unmanned locomotive, nicknamed “The Beast” and loaded with toxic cargo, roars through the countryside, vaporizing anything put in front of it. A veteran engineer (Washington) and a young conductor (Pine), aboard another train in the runaway’s path, devise an incredible plan to try and stop it – and prevent certain disaster in a heavily populated area.

The film will be in cinemas worldwide on the 12th of November this year and the soundtrack will be available digitally on iTunes and physically through all good retailers.

  1. Glad to see Tony is proving a steady source of score work for you guys.

Any chance you could point out which score tracks you did on the OST when it comes out?

  2. We’ll certainly give you a nod to which cues had lots of our involvement, we haven’t heard the finished album ourselves… The working process with Harry means that it’s a highly collaborative affair and is mostly feeding layers of music back and forth, it’s rare that a cue would be 100% Hybrid but our style hopefully adds something to it all. It’s a really bloody good film by the way!

  3. Maybe a new Scores album also :) ?

  4. Hybrid and Harry-Gregson Williams – these two names are a pledge of musical perfection. Finally I can retire some tracks from my music player and listen to some fresh beaty-symphonic awesomeness – can’t wait! :)

  5. Congrats on the score. They couldn’t have picked a better team. Now there’s a movie on my calendar.

  6. Ohhhh…! nice! i`m so looking forward to this! Hollywood needs a fresh Hybrid aproach!

  7. This is great news! Definitely one to look forward to, Hybrid simply don’t get enough recognition for there amazing repertoire of score work – I could not be a bigger fan, keep it up guys!

BTW are you still going to release that sample CD you were talking about a while a go? That would be awesome if you had some of your score work included.

  8. Can’t wait! Loved the music and films you have worked on prior. Any chance of a sole Hybrid score soon (aside from Catacombs)? Also, way off-topic, but among the many tracks I listen to of yours I still to this day listen to the Ron Houder – Outskirts remix weekly. That build up is out of this world and gets me soooo amped. In fact, I leave for Vegas tomorrow and it is blasting as we speak! Keep up the great work!

  9. One thing that really bothers me about the subtle but important contribution Hybrid makes to many of Harry Gregson-Williams’ film scores, mostly for Tony Scott, is that Hybrid is never given credit, either within the film or the liner notes for those scores.

What’s the deal with that?! Is Hybrid Harry’s secret weapon?

  10. Nah, we do get a mention in the credits, it’s just that there’s normally thousands of people involved so you need a magnifying glass to spot us on there! Not so secret, but weapon? Oh yeah.. If you get a chance to see Unstoppable when it comes out you’ll spot our contributions a mile off.

Have a look at this :

  11. Just saw the film, enjoyed it. Was pretty easy to hear which parts Hybrid contributed to, so hopefully we’ll see those parts on the official release. BTW, Any of you guys know why the release is on December 7th and not at the same time as the film was released?

  12. Fantastic work guys! loved the movie! I can truly spot your work from a mile off. Excelent as allways!
